CREDIT was established in June 2002. It is our mission to assist with Ireland’s coming transition to a renewable energy-based economy. It is in the process of becoming a national focal point for renewable energy research and development and academic programmes.

Our research themes are wind energy with specific focus on small and medium wind systems, electricity storage in flow battery systems and bioenergy from marine sources. CREDIT's staff also teach on the Masters in Renewable Energy Systems course administered by the School of Engineering, and we can draw on significant experience in many areas of renewable energy technologies.

In August 2005 Dundalk IT installed the world’s first large commercial turbine to be located on a college campus. CREDIT's Larry Staudt assisted in the planning phases and the turbine commenced operation in October 2005. It currently generates approximately half of Dundalk IT’s electricity needs.

Enterprise Ireland supported the installation of a 500 kWh flow battery energy storage system on our campus in December 2009. This system is the first of its kind in Europe and only the third in the world from this manufacturer. CREDIT will use the battery to investigate ways of making wind energy more viable in the future.

Our INTERREG IVA marine energy research project, BioMara, commenced in 2009 and will run to 2012. The project will investigate technical and socio-economic factors in exploiting marine biomass resources. Further information is available on the BioMara webpage here.

Further information on our projects and research can be found on our 'Projects' page. To contact us please use our online form.
