Dr Victoria McAneany from the RSCI, Dublin will deliver a seminar on her research entitled "Rapid Actions of Aldosterone in the Renal Cortical Collecting Duct -From Receptor to Effector”

Following the recent success in securing funding through Enterprise Ireland's Applied Research Enhancement Scheme, the Smooth Muscle Research Centre will launch its Ion Channel Biotechnology Centre on January 19th 2010.

Following the success of researchers at the Centre in securing funding from the Council of Directors under their Strand 1 programme, applications are invited from enthusiastic Life Science graduates to join a dynamic team focused on investigating the mechanisms underlying the control of smooth muscle.

The Childrens Medical and Research Foundation at Crumlin Hospital has awarded a 3 year grant to Dr Gerard Sergeant at the Smooth Muscle Research Centre in DkIT.

Mr Bernard Drumm, who recently finished his B.Sc Hons in Biopharmaceutical Science at DkIT, has joined the SMRC under their Summer Student Scheme.

Research seminars on 23rd November 2007 at 1.00 p.m by Professor Paul Kemp and Dr Daniela Riccardi from the University of Cardiff.

Dr JS Young from the Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford will deliver a seminar on his research entitled

"'Measures of neurotransmission reveal variable effective packet size."

This will take place at 12.00pm on Monday 29th October in the 1st floor seminar room of the Regional Development Centre. Staff and students welcome.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic Life Science graduates to join a dynamic team focused on investigating the mechanisms underlying the control of smooth muscle. Based in state of the art laboratories at DkIT, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to receive training in electrophysiology, molecular biology, Ca2+ imaging and immunohistochemistry.

Dr Phil Newsholme from the Conway Institute at University College Dublin will deliver a seminar on his research entitled "Positive and negative effects of amino acids on pancreatic beta cell Ca2+ handling - consequences for insulin secretion". The seminar will take place at 1.00pm in the seminar room on the first floor of the Regional Development Centre.

Professor Noel McHale has been awarded a prestigious Conference Grant to enable the Smooth Muscle Research Centre host the Fifth International Symposium on Interstitial Cells of Cajal. Details of the Conference can be found at the website www.isicc.org

Dr Alan Burns from University College London, will deliver a lecture on his research today. It will take place at 1 pm in the Seminar Room, 1st Floor, Regional Development Centre. Staff and students are welcome to attend.

Candidates are invited to apply for a PhD position to study role of interstitial cells of Cajal in the corpus cavernosum.
Erectile dysfunction affects around 10% of all men and up to 50% of diabetic men over 50 years old. Although not life threatening, this disorder threatens the quality of life, causing loss of self-esteem and placing severe strain on relationships.

Professor Corne J Kros (School of Life Sciences - University of Sussex) will deliver a lecture entitled 'From action potential to receptor potential: developmental changes in inner hair cell signalling' at 1pm in the seminar room at the Regional Development Centre

Dr. Keith Thornbury of the Smooth Muscle Group has been awarded a grant of €160,000 from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) for ongoing research work in the Centre. This is the second major SFI grant secured by the Centre in the last couple of years.
