On monday last, Dermot Ahern TD, Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform, officially launched a €1.5m research programme based at Dundalk Institute of Technology which will see the Institute partner with higher education institutions in Ireland and Uganda to support sustainable water resource management in the eastern African country.
Water Is Life
The aim of this programme is to support sustainable water resource management as a catalyst for sustainable economic and social development. The economic, social and technical pillars of sustainability are cross-cut by the issue of safe water provision.
Our programme aims to research and learn from activities in each of these areas and measure their impact through health and development in Uganda, with the overall aim of sustainable poverty reduction. In addition, this programme intends to examine closely related work already ongoing in this area and link-in with what is already established both here in Ireland and in Uganda - culminating in the establishment of an integrated extensive Geographical Information Systems (GIS) database.
‘Water is Life: Amazzi Bulamu’ (2007-2011) is a large multi-disciplinary project comprising a partnership of Irish Higher Education Institutions, Makerere University in Uganda and various NGOs.
