  • Evita

    DkIT Department of Music & Creative Media will stage Evita from March 10th-12th starting at 7pm nightly in the New Black Box Theatre by special licence from The Really Useful Group Ltd.

  • Composition workshop

    The composer Siobhán Cleary will be giving a masterclass in composition this Thursday, the 4th of March at 2.30 in the Music Department on the Town Campus. All welcome.

  • Czech Opera Lecture

    Professor Jan Smaczny, Hamilton Harty Professor of Music at Queen's University Belfast, will give a lecture on Czech opera as part of Ceol Oirghialla's musicology seminar series on Thursday 25th February 2010.

  • Raulandsakademiet, University of Telemark Staff and Students in Concert

    Students and staff from Raulandsakademiet, University of Telemark will perform a joint concert with music students from Ceol Oirghialla on Thursday 4th February 2010. The concert will commence at 1.30pm in the New Black Box Theatre.

  • Haiti Benifit Concert

    The Department of Music presents a special lunchtime concert on Thursday 28th Jan in aid of GOAL's appeal for victims of the Haiti disaster. The concert will take place in the New Blackbox Theatre at 1:05pm and will finish at 1:50pm to enable staff and students return to class at 2pm. Admission €5

DkIT provides a state-of-the-art teaching, learning and research environment dedicated to musical learning. This page details our Facilities and Studio Booking Guidelines.

Facilities

The department comprises fully equipped lecture theatres, networked computer music labs, a recording studio, a Sonic Arts Performance Space and an Interactive Systems room. As well as having a range of electronic and acoustic pianos the department also has an extensive range of instruments available to students throughout their degree including double-basses, cellos, violins, marimba, timpani, drum kits, etc. DkIT is also the only music department in Ireland to have a full family of classical guitars including Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Listed below are some of the hardware and software tool used for teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Hardware and software tools for teaching, learning, and research include the following:

  • sound synthesis and signal processing
    (Csound and utilities, Reaktor, SuperCollider, Max/MSP, Pluggo, PD);
  • sound editing and manipulation
    (Wavelab/Soundforge, Sound Hack, Audiosculpt, CDP, Cubase);
  • programming, development
    (C, C++, PHP, Python, Java);
  • multi-track recording and production
    (Pro Tools, Audition, and low-latency audio interfaces);
  • algorithmic composition
    (Tabula Vigilans, Koan Pro, Bol Processor);
  • MIDI & audio sequencing
    (Cubase / Sonar and 5-octave keyboard controllers, MIDI Foot-pedals, MIDI fader banks);
  • technology in music education
    (Sibelius educational suite, Earope, TimeSketch Editor, CALMA)
  • gesture-tracking devices
    (Sound Beam, Eowave Eobody, MIDI Creator & Gesture).

At the heart of the recording studio is an Audient ASP 8024 36-channel inline mixing desk and high-end Pro Tools system on a Mac platform. A range of microphones and portable recording equipment is available for location recording.

Studio Booking Guidelines

In order to book the studio during the summer months please email Paul McGettrick (paul.mcgettrick@dkit.ie) and Rory Walsh (rorywalsh@ear.ie) to book the slot; please also copy your email to the studio technician Derek Farrell (derek.farrell@dkit.ie). You should email your booking at least 5 days in advance of your desired time; the studio
timetable, which will appear on this page in the next few weeks will then be updated to reflect your booking.
When your pre-booked time arrives you will need to give your Student ID card to the caretaker (Peter / Tommy) to gain access to the studio.
